Kinect : Gears of War (idea)

…I’ve been obsessing on Kinect all day. Wondering at how to make a serious game with it.

Keep thinking there could be an cool game that mixes two things:
1) the super-photo sleuthing from Blade Runner (“quadrant 3, enhance. go back. turn 10 degrees. enhance.”)
2) giving speeches (reading text aloud. maybe deviating from script if crowd is getting restless. emphatic gesturing.) Continue reading “Kinect : Gears of War (idea)”

I hate halo

Joystick’s bullshit Friday “talk amongst yourselves” post asks : What is the most overrated video game.

this immediately broughtto mind: the entirety of the Halo series.

My friends have pressured me into getting each goddamned halo, and each time I : have no fun. (well, the cast of Firefly pressured me into getting HaloODST). Peer pressure must be a part of it. And I’m still quietly convinced the main reason this game sells is thanks to stoners, and Microsoft itself buying a few million copies to artificially boost sales. Continue reading “I hate halo”

game idea: Attack Die!

someone should make a 3rd person game with every in-game character tethered to a giant die. Like a big comical ball and chain, with physics.
annnnd: whatever face is currently up on the die controls the stats. (or maybe which ever face is getting the most light? so you could have three sided die? and puzzles where lighting changes?)

So you’d constantly be choosing whether you want to attack them, or their die.
(maybe have something where high numbers are good for defense, but low numbers are good for fast attacks).

maybe running makes die tumble around, but walking/tiptoeing keeps die stable. (so you could have stealth areas where you try to get a good roll, then drag it slowly through a deadly gauntlet. which would have to have minor bumps on floor for maximum white knuckles).
Like, the die could be contextual, reflecting how low your steps are (in this area).

hmm.
maybe you could “level up” by adding more die. maybe different kinds of die could represent different powers (d3 is tied to your leg if you use fire sword. or a d10 is tied to your leg if you equip to ice shield).
picture these barbarians running around with 10 different kinds of die dragging behind them.

for some reason i find this intensely exciting. 🙂

Review: L4D2 The Passing DLC

I ranted on some forum about how the new DLC for L4D2 is great, because i couldn’t believe people were attacking it (sigh. Oh, internet). Since I’ll probably just be flamed, I thought it wise to save these thoughts on this here blog. n’stuff.

(spoilers for the DLC in here! don’t read if you haven’t played!)

…I thought this DLC was way better than expected. Crash Course was neat, but this one improved on all levels.

Demon’s Souls (1%) – 10/10!

(The idea of this title is to mention how much of the game I’ve played before giving this rating. So i could go back at 50% and say “shit/10”, and again at whatever point I give up on ever playing it again).

So I basically got through the training levels last night. Which might even be less than 1% of the game?
But I’m totally psyched to go on, so I feel a need to rant it out.

* I’m still avidly addicted to watching Zero Punc. (which I think would be a charming new name/spelling for the show, implying both punk rock and a disdain for explaining your abbreviations through the use of proper punctuation). Continue reading “Demon’s Souls (1%) – 10/10!”

Sorta Review: Surveillance (movie) & Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (game)

It’s hard to review a movie made for incomprehensible reasons. It’s like wanting to review food from a restaurant, but you’re not sure if they wanted to make an italian dish, or some sushi. They probably just failed. but since it isn’t clear what they wanted to do, it’s hard to say how they fucked up.

Surveillance is Jennifer Lynch’s second film. I watched it because I want to (unfairly) compare her to her father. See if anything rubbed off. And yet, whenever I saw anything that resembled a lynch moment, i found myself cringing. (like: a slow shimmering push-in on a police station with a bricked up window, covered by a droning industrial noise).

Uh. i don’t really have the patience to try and review this movie properly. … why am i writing this? Continue reading “Sorta Review: Surveillance (movie) & Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (game)”
